Tip of the Week

Interviewing

Landing a first interview is an awesome feeling. Getting to the second, third, or fourth round is an even better feeling.

But how can you increase your odds of impressing your interviewer enough that they’ll push you through the process?

I’ve been through dozens of interviews over the past few months and I had to learn from my own mistakes to get this down perfectly. Here’s some things I now do prior to each interview:

  1. Research the company - try to find out when/who/why the company was founded. Look into recent news that the company has. Google and/or look at the company’s own blog page will have great information.

  2. Research the interviewer - what does your interviewer like? Sports? Gardening? Are they a parent? What school did they go to? People love putting all sorts of info on their LinkedIn profile.

  3. Know your resume - I am constantly updating my resume which means that sometimes I don’t know which version I applied to a job with. Try to keep track of which resume you’re using if you are the same and know your experiences and impact in your prior roles inside and out.

  4. Know the job description - try to align what you say in your interview to what you see in the job description. Use their language when you speak so it sounds familiar to them

  5. Come prepared with real examples from past roles - examples, examples, examples! Did you train new team members in previous roles? Did you have an experience where you work cross functionally? Try to remember real life examples of things you did and what impact it had on the business.

I know this list may sound simple or obvious but it’s so important to keep refreshing yourself on the basics.

Just take it one interview at a time and you’ll eventually get that offer!
