Tip of the Week

Your Career Choices

Over the weekend someone told me they didnโ€™t take a job offer to join an early stage startup 10 years ago. This startup, worth 300 million dollars at the time, is now worth around 75 billion dollars. If he had taken the job, his equity in the company would be worth approximately 30 million dollars.

Iโ€™m sure you have a similar story but maybe at a smaller scale.

Did you turn down an opportunity to be an early employee at a company that would have provided great financial benefits or career mobility? Have you ever said no to a promotion that you now regret?

Itโ€™s completely normal to have regrets about past career choices because you can now see the overwhelmingly positive outcome that would have come from it.

Do you ever think about the company that shut down 6 months after your job offer? Or how about the company that laid off half the company a year after you would have started?

My point is not to make you nostalgic or feel bad (or good) about your decisions but to let you know that weโ€™ve all had those moments of clarity years later when the outcomes were no longer unclear.

Life is all about decisions and you wo'nโ€™t ever know what decision is correct in the moment. You need to make the correct decision for your family at the time and just hope for the best?

Are you single with no kids? Maybe take a bit more risk and start your own company or join a startup for the potential upside.

Married with 2 or 3 kids? Maybe take the more stable state job that provides benefits.

You wonโ€™t ever know that you made the most optimal decision financially or career wise but youโ€™ll know that you made the decision that was best for you and your family at the time.
